Went to a double shooting tonight. This is the second one I’ve been on. We were told that it was safe to approach, but really it wasn’t. There were people everywhere and PD wasn’t doing much to help. We triaged the scene and went to to the more critical patient. The fire department was there with us, and since they have to be EMT or paramedic certified, they tended to the less critical one. It wasn’t in the best neighborhood and looking back on it, things could’ve very easily taken a turn for the worse. On one hand you had a group saying that this person deserved it and on the other you had people saying that one deserved it. No one deserves to get shot. I had to basically scream to get people to move out of the way and those who didn’t were pushed aside with the spine board I was carrying. There was another ambulance that came to back us up. We had already loaded the more critical patient, who was already dead, and they snatched the less critical one. They left before us do to the fact that they were able to get an IV faster and didn’t have to worry about intubating their patient. I was able to do chest compressions though and there were even a few ribs left for me to crack. It sounds horrible, but it’s a cool feeling. It feels like cracking your knuckles. The city police department was worthless. It took them forever to gain control. I had to drive forward and straighten out before I could back up. They kept telling me that I couldn’t go straight down the street. I had lost it with the bystanders, but now I lost it with them. I yelled at the officer that going straight was the only way I was going to be able to straighten out and get the hell out of there. I, obviously, drove lights and sirens to the hospital and once there I wasn’t able to find a parking spot because of all the police vehicles. That really pissed me off! Luckliy there were other EMS crew memebers there and they were able to move their ambulances out of the way and help us get our patient out of the truck. As soon as we got our patient into the ER, the doctor called it and pronounced our patient dead. No one was suprised. My only fear now is going to court. The officers kept asking us if we knew what happend. Yeah right! Like I have time to go around asking people what started it. Anyways, what’s done is done. Another life has been taken for no good reason.
