It’s not what the world holds for you, it’s what you bring to it

At an Irish wedding reception someone yelled….
“Would all the married men, please stand next to the one person who has made your life worth living.”
The bartender was almost crushed to death.

Love is a gift, not an obligation….

A friend is someone who does things that count, but does not stop to count them.

Don’t confuse your path with your destination. Just because it’s stormy now doesn’t mean that you aren’t headed for sunshine.

Why God made Paramedics & EMTs….

When god made paramedics & EMTs, He was on His sixth day of overtime. An angel appeared & said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”
God said, “Have you read the specs on this order? A paramedic/EMT has to be able to carry an injured person up a wet, grassy hill in the dark, dodge stray bullets to reach a dying child unharmed, enter homes a health inspector wouldn’t touch, & not wrinkle his/her uniform. He/she has to be able to lift three times his/her own weight. Crawl into wrecked cars with barley enough room to move, & console a grieving mother as he/she is doing CPR on a baby he/she knows will never breathe again. He/she has to be in top mental conditions at all times, running on no sleep, black coffee & half eaten meals, & has to have six pairs of hands.”
The angel shook her head slowly & said, “Six pairs of hands….no way.”
“It’s not the hands that are causing me the problems,”God replied. It’s the three pairs of eyes a medic/EMT has to have.” “That’s on the standard model?” asked the angel.
God nodded. “One pair that sees open sores as he/she’s drawing blood, always wondering if the patent is HIV positive.” (when they already know they should’ve taken that accounting job)
“Another pair here in the side of his/her head for their partners safety. And another pair that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim & say, you’ll be alright ma’am when he/she knows it isn’t so.
“Lord,” said the angel, touching His sleeve, “rest & work on this tomorrow.”
“I can’t,” God replied.
“I already have a model that can talk a 250 lb drunk out from behind a steering wheel without incident & feed a family of five on a private service paycheck.”
The angel circled the model of the medic/EMT very slowly. “Can I think?” she asked.
“You bet”, God said.
“It can tell you the symptoms of 100 illnesses; recite drug calculations in its sleep; intubate, defibrillate, medicate, & continue CPR nonstop over rough terrain that any doctor would fear….& it still keeps its sense of humor. This medic/EMT also has phenomenal personal control. He/she can deal with a multi-victim trauma, coax a frightened elderly person to unlock their door, comfort a murder victim’s family, & then read in the daily paper how medics/EMTs were unable to locate a house quickly enough, allowing the person to die. A house that had no street sign, no house number, no phone to call back.”
Finally, the angel bent over & ran her finger across the cheek of the medic/EMT.
“There’s a leak,” she pronounced.
“I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model.”
“That’s not a leak,” God replied, “It’s a tear.”
“What’s the tear for?” asked the angel.
“It’s for bottled up emotions, for patients they’ve tried in vain to save, for commitment to that hope that they will make a difference in a person’s chance to survive, for life.”
“You’re a genius!” said the angel.
God looked somber.
“I DIDN’T PUT IT THERE” He said.

Went to a double shooting tonight. This is the second one I’ve been on. We were told that it was safe to approach, but really it wasn’t. There were people everywhere and PD wasn’t doing much to help. We triaged the scene and went to to the more critical patient. The fire department was there with us, and since they have to be EMT or paramedic certified, they tended to the less critical one. It wasn’t in the best neighborhood and looking back on it, things could’ve very easily taken a turn for the worse. On one hand you had a group saying that this person deserved it and on the other you had people saying that one deserved it. No one deserves to get shot. I had to basically scream to get people to move out of the way and those who didn’t were pushed aside with the spine board I was carrying. There was another ambulance that came to back us up. We had already loaded the more critical patient, who was already dead, and they snatched the less critical one. They left before us do to the fact that they were able to get an IV faster and didn’t have to worry about intubating their patient. I was able to do chest compressions though and there were even a few ribs left for me to crack. It sounds horrible, but it’s a cool feeling. It feels like cracking your knuckles. The city police department was worthless. It took them forever to gain control. I had to drive forward and straighten out before I could back up. They kept telling me that I couldn’t go straight down the street. I had lost it with the bystanders, but now I lost it with them. I yelled at the officer that going straight was the only way I was going to be able to straighten out and get the hell out of there. I, obviously, drove lights and sirens to the hospital and once there I wasn’t able to find a parking spot because of all the police vehicles. That really pissed me off! Luckliy there were other EMS crew memebers there and they were able to move their ambulances out of the way and help us get our patient out of the truck. As soon as we got our patient into the ER, the doctor called it and pronounced our patient dead. No one was suprised. My only fear now is going to court. The officers kept asking us if we knew what happend. Yeah right! Like I have time to go around asking people what started it. Anyways, what’s done is done. Another life has been taken for no good reason.

“Sigh No More Ladies….” -Shakespeare

Sigh no more ladies,
Sigh no more.
Men were deceivers ever,
One foot in sea,
And one on shore,
To one thing constant never,
Then sigh not so,
But let them go,
And be you blithe and bonny,
Converting all your sounds of woe,
Into hey nonny nonny!

“Into the woods you go again. You have to every now and then. Into the woods no telling when. Be ready for the journey. Into the woods, but not too fast for what you wish you lose at last. Into the woods, but mind the past. Into the woods, but mind the future. Into the woods but not to stray or tend to the wolf or steal from the giant. The way is dark, the light is dim, but now there’s you, me, her and him. The chances look small, the choices look grim, but everything you learn there will help when you return there. The light is getting dimmer….I think I see a glimmer….”
